Resolution tabled by the Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) of Tanzania

December 6, 2021

Whereas CHADEMA leaders, members and supporters have continued been subjected to state sponsored persecution, illegal detention and harassment,

Whereas the government of Tanzania under Samia Suluhu Hassan has continued suffocating opposition legal political activities which include public rallies,

Whereas 314 CHADEMA leaders, members and supporters across Tanzania are still being illegally detained or charged with trumped-up crimes especially after the 2020 general election,

Whereas, while about to officiate national party movement for the demand and advocacy of constitution changes in Tanzania, CHADEMA national chairman Hon Freeman Mbowe was abducted by security forces, detained and thereafter charged with bogus terrorism and economic crimes,

Whereas, in administering justice for Hon Freeman Mbowe, the legitimacy and integrity of the Judiciary in Tanzania has so far been severely compromised by President Samia herself and the actions of state operatives to the extent of failing to execute laws where needed and necessary,

The International Democrat Union:

  1. Expresses its grave concern regarding the continued ill-treatment of leaders, members and supporters of CHADEMA in Tanzania. The IDU demand Tanzania authorities to incontinently stop harassment, illegal detention, intimidation and persecution of CHADEMA leaders, members and supporters.
  2. Calls upon President Samia Suluhu Hassan to respect the existing Tanzania constitution and laws which guarantee opposition the right to conduct their political activities uninterrupted.
  1. Underlines that the case against Hon Freeman Mbowe is politically motivated and has no legal foundation to be in the court of law. Therefore, to save and protect the credibility of the Judiciary the Samia government should drop this case.
  2. Calls upon President Samia Suluhu Hassan to unconditionally release Hon Freeman Mbowe and all other CHADEMA leaders, members and supporters detained in different prison remands forthwith.
  3. Supports the call and the movement of CHADEMA in demanding constitutional changes in Tanzania as this is the only way that will guarantee freedom, justice, peace and security and, ultimately, development of the already highly polarized nation of the East Africa region.
