AWARE of Tanzania’s hostile political climate in which the Chairman of CHADEMA Party, Hon.Tundu Lissu has been arrested, detained, and charged with treason and three cyber offenses.
COGNISANT of the continued wave of illegal arrests and detention, abductions, harassment, disappearances and torture of CHADEMA Party leaders, members, and other critics of the government ahead of the flawed October 2025 general election.
HAVING revisited the 2023 IDU resolution calling upon the government of Tanzania to implement constitutional and legislative electoral reforms to guarantee free, fair, and transparent elections.
AWARE that the CHADEMA Party and the public of Tanzania demand electoral reforms even if it means postponing the October 2025 general elections to avoid a repeat of past unfair elections.
The International Democracy Union;
- Is seriously concerned by and strongly condemns the continued arrest, detention, abduction, torture, disappearances and political persecution of CHADEMA Party leaders, members and activists, and government critics.
- Reiterates that the high treason charge levelled against Hon Tundu Lissu is politically motivated and lacks any legal foundation; thus, should be immediately and unconditionally dropped and Hon. Lissu set free.
- Is satisfied that the scheduled October 2025 election will see nothing short of manipulation, rigging and serious violence against the CHADEMA Party and the wider opposition as the government of Tanzania has purposely decided not to change the current flawed constitution and implement major electoral reforms as demanded by the general public and advised by the international community.
- Calls upon the international community to increase pressure on the government of Tanzania to uphold and respect fundamental human rights, the rule of law, and democracy which can only be so by ushering in constitutional and legal reforms in the country.
- Support the clear demands for electoral reforms before the 2025 general election demanded by the CHADEMA Party and the wider Tanzania public.
