The IDU Executive on 2nd February 2010 unanimously adopted Democratas (Brazil) as a new full member party of the IDU, to be ratified by the next IDU Party Leaders Meeting.
The IDU Executive unanimously passed the following resolution on Haiti:
The International Democrat Union expresses its profound sympathy to the Haitian people on the appalling loss of life and destruction of homes and livelihoods caused by the recent earthquake.
The IDU recognizes the solidarity and support shown by the international community to the people of Haiti, and in particular salutes the generous, immediate and sustained help given by the people and government of the Dominican Republic, and also the substantial support given by the United States, Taiwan and others.
The IDU calls on the international community, especially the UN, the G-20, the Club of Paris, the World Bank, the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), to consider the creation of an International Rescue Fund for Haiti, to ensure the sustainability of the immediate effort by the international community and also to provide the basis for a better future for the Haitian people.
The International Rescue Fund and other help to Haiti need to be combined with debt reduction measures to help relieve poverty and lay the foundations for both physical and social reconstruction in the country.
