(BBC News/The Guardian): On Monday 10 September, Hassan Sheikh
Mohamoud was elected President of Somalia by 190 to 79 votes cast by Somali
MPs. This is the first time in years that a candidate has been elected on
Somali soil, which is said to be a clear sign of improving security.
Nonetheless, the situation continues to be dangerous in Somalia with
assassinations and suicide bombings being a constant threat in the capital
Mogadishu.
Mohamoud, who has held various positions
with NGOs and development organizations such as UNICEF, entered politics in
2011 by establishing the Peace and Development Party (PDP). The academic was
sworn into office immediately after being declared the winner.
