Taiwan held presidential elections on 22 March 2008, and the result was a landslide victory for Dr Ma Ying-jeou of the Kuomintang (KMT), an IDU member party, receiving 58.45 pct of the votes. The other candidate, Frank Hsieh of the governing party DPP, was trounced with 41.55 pct.
Dr Ma is the former Mayor of Taipei, and ran on a campaign favouring closer ties to Mainland China.
