21 April: Presidential and Parliament elections in Nigeria

In Nigeria elections to choose a successor to President Olusegun Obasanjo and elect a new national assembly will be held on 21 April 2007, preceded by elections for state governors and regional assemblies on 14 April.

This could mark the first democratic transfer of power from one civilian president to another since Nigerian independence in 1960. President Obasanjo has served two terms, the maximum allowed under the constitution, since being elected in 1999.

However, Nigeria's electoral commission's has omitted Vice-President Atiku Abubakar from the approved list of candidates for next month's election, citing corruption charges as the reason. 24 other candidates are cleared for the ballot. The Vice-President became a leading opposition candidate after falling out with his former ally the President and says that he will challenge the decision in court.
