Gjorgje Ivanov will face Ljubomir Frckoski in a run-off for the presidency of FYROM, the Republic of Macedonia, on 5 April 2009.
VMRO-DPMNE, the leading party in the Macedonian parliament and IDU Observer member, nominated Mr Ivanov as their presidential candidate. He won the first round of the election with 34 % of the votes, according to preliminary results. Mr Frckoski, nominated by the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia, won 19.8 % of the votes. As neither candidate won an absolute majority of all registered voters, the election will be decided in a run-off electioon on Sunday 5 April. Polls indicate that Mr Ivanov is best positioned to win the final round.
